Windsor Oaks 2014 Sangiovese, Summit Blocks, Chalk Hill, Sonoma
A rare find, Sangiovese from one of the elite growing regions of California. Chalk Hill is famous for full-bodied Cabs, Merlots and even Chards, but this unique corner of Sonoma County has the perfect balance of warm climate and high altitude that Sangiovese thrives in. Windsor Oaks Vineyards have 700 acres planted to prime varietals, most of which are contracted to boutique wineries. But each vintage they bottle a little bit of their own. This Sangiovese grows in the highest blocks of their estate vineyard with rocky, swirled, basalt volcanic soils. These low yielding blocks are known for their intensity and power, with later ripening and deep, rich flavors. They produced just 20 barrels (500 cases) of this and it was the first Sangiovese they'd produced since 2009 so it's a rare bird indeed. Pure crimson ruby color leads into an aromatic nose of black cherries, dried rose petals and tangerine peel. Polished tannins and bright acidity on the palate with vibrant flavors of cherry, cranberry, exotic spice and citrus peel. This is a wine that is delicious now but will also age beautifully over the next 4-6 years. Don't miss it!
You might not expect to see a California Sangiovese but give it some thought and it makes sense... all the pioneers of the California wine industry i.e. Gallo, Mondavi etc. were Italian. So I say California and Sangiovese go together hand in hand! The Windsor Oaks Sangiovese is delicious and round with balanced tannin that make it an excellent food partner. Give it a try!
Think Brunello Meets Cali! This has all the classic high quality Sangiovese character but with that Napa opulence and structure. Fruit driven surrounded by dried herbs, smoke and spice.. this is just a pleasure to drink on its own but would pair wonderfully with anything from pizza and pasta to a grilled filet.
