The Calling 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley
The Calling is a collaboration between Jim Nantz the famous golf and sports commentator (who also happens to be a HUGE wine enthusiast) and importer Peter Deutsch. The Calling sources prime grapes from several vineyards in Alexander Valley. The Alexander Valley’s surrounding hillsides block the coastal fogs that cover much of Sonoma County on summer mornings, allowing this region to remain a little warmer than neighboring appellations. However, gentle coastal breezes manage to find their way between the hillsides to cool the region in the evening. This climate, combined with well-drained, gravelly soils help the region produce some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in California. The 2013 vintage was one of the best in at least a decade, bringing incredible quality fruit. This 2013 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes were hand-sorted and gently crushed. The wine underwent native-yeast fermentation in barrel and had an extended maceration period to soften the tannins. After 24 months in 50% new French oak, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered to enhance complexity and aging potential. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 90 points saying "This straightforward wine shows an exuberance of toasted oak and grip at first before relaxing into its more mannered self, a twist of cedar and sage giving it a classic sensibility. Cassis and black cherry take on more power on the full-bodied palate, exhibiting the soft approachability of the appellation." On Sale!
