Ernie Els 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa
World champion PGA Golfer, Ernie Els dons a second cap as a world class vintner. Since 1999 he has produced wines from the vineyards in his native turf of South Africa, a land with a long winegrowing tradition. Smartly he's teamed up with an experienced and gifted enologist and sources grapes from the best regions. This Cabernet Sauvignon is from vineyards in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, known for excellent Cabernet. At 800 feet above see level and a northern exposure these sun-drenched, hillside vines are tempered by high altitude and Atlantic Ocean breezes that bring beautiful balance and exceptional flavor to the grapes. Five different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon are planted here, each bringing different nuances. A careful hand sort is done of all the grapes at the winery to select only the healthiest fruit. Maceration lasted 10-16 days and the wine was then aged in 20% new French oak barrels for 17 months. The wine scored 90 points from the Wine Spectator who said "Ripe and energetic, with a juicy core of black currant, fig and blackberry fruit, carried by brambly tannins through the finish. Shows ample grip, but the fresh acidity is well-embedded. Should unwind nicely with brief cellaring. Drink now through 2018."
