Flora Springs 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Located at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains in the far Northwest corner of the Rutherford appellation, the Flora Springs estate is in the heart of the Napa Valley. Founded in 1978, Flora Springs has been a family affair for over three decades. As both artisan winemakers and growers, the family is committed to the traditions of fine winemaking and responsible stewardship of its 650 acres of vineyard land for future generations to savor and uphold. Today, ninety percent of Flora Springs' red wines are sourced from its organically-farmed estate vineyards, and all of these wines are crafted in their solar-powered 19th-century stone winery and caves. For this 2013 Napa Valley Cab grapes were sourced from some of Napa Valley's most prestigious appellations, including the mid-valley regions of Rutherford and Oakville. As in previous vintages, a portion of the hand-picked grapes were pressed off early to minimize skin contact and retain the bright fruit forward character. The balance was left on the skins for an extended period of time to extract soft tannins which round out the mid-palate and create a lovely long finish. A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in 75% French oak and 25% America oak. WIne Enthusiast Magazine scored this 91 points saying "This is a big, bold and grippy wine, reflective of the vintage in its classic structure and age-worthiness. Cedar, black cherry and chalky tannins give it character and seasoning. The smooth, silky texture should take on additional velvetiness in the glass. It finishes with finesse."
I was stunned by how good this wine is! Classic Napa character but with some finesse and a sort of elegant feel... Plush and supple on the palate with well developed fruit from start to finish. Big and enticing now, this will certainly evolve over the next several years as well... drinks like twice the price!
