Montes 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Classic Series, Colchagua Vly.
Considered one of the most able practitioners in the cellar, winemaker Aurelio Montes has always maintained that "80% of good wine comes from the vineyards and on 20% from the cellar." So vineyard care is paramount, enabling Montes to produce world-class wines. From the vineyard rows to the cellar, they carefully study every variable in the winemaking process. This Cab is sourced from their meticulously cared-for vineyards, high in the foothills of the Andes Mountains where the Cabernet grapes benefit from the cool temperatures and the brilliant sunlight. The grapes are brought into their gravity-flow winery that allows gentle handling. 15% Merlot is blended in and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 8 months.
The Wine Spectator selected it as one of their Top 100 Wines of 2016. They scored it 90 points saying "There's minerally freshness to the ripe dark plum, blackberry and cherry flavors, with peppery hints. Well-structured and crisp midpalate, featuring Asian spice and black fig notes on the finish. Drink now through 2020."
I'm just now exploring wine, and this one was quite delicious. I don't know all the descriptive nomenclature to offer any sort of help. Instead I will say that I enjoyed a bottle with a very nice hanger steak, roasted fingerling potatoes, and creamed spinach. The wine was absolutely perfect with this meal, and I'm very pleased.
