About Our Ratings

Ravenswood 2013 Zinfandel, Teldeschi Vyd., Dry Creek Valley
Franco Teldeschi (who, upon coming to America, began calling himself Frank) planted a vineyard and sold grapes to Italian home winemakers in San Francisco. Sometime later, during the 1970s, a young Joel Peterson came to his house in Dry Creek Valley and asked if he could buy some grapes for his new winery, Ravenswood. He and Frank sat down under a tree and Frank opened a bottle of his homemade wine; four hours later Joel could hardly walk, but he had a deal for a few tons of Zinfandel and it was some of the best Dry Creek Valley Zin he's ever tasted. Today Frank's son John Teldeschi takes care of the vineyard. Some of the vines are 90 years old, and the grapes are the classic Italian-Californian field blend: Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane. But it's mostly Zinfandel. Ravenswood's Teldeschi Zin is one of their best wines every vintage. Selected as one of the Best Wines of 2016 in Beverage Dynamics with a score of 96 points. They said "Nearly opaque ruby/purple in the glass. The nose is filled with black brambly fruit, hints of spice, and a touch of cocoa. Rich, and mouth-filling, this is a definite keeper." Wine & Spirits rated it 94 points saying "There's delicious suppleness to the fruit, yet its stony tannins hold a cooling mintiness underneath—a sensation that made our panel think about mountain cabernet as much as zin. The astonishing thing about this wine, aside from its structural integrity, is its sheer range of aromas, from the brightness of pomegranate seeds through anise and cassis to the earthy savor of a damp forest floor littered with black trumpet mushrooms. It feels like a great vineyard capturing a great California vintage." Very Limited!

Ravenswood Zinfandel
Wow! I haven't seen this in my location in years. I'm sure it's still the step above Zinfandel that I used to enjoy. Fixing to order some!
