Z. Alexander Brown 2015 Uncaged, Proprietary Red, North Coast
Known for his band and his music, Zac Brown is a creative spirit who has a passion for bringing music, food, and people together. The next logical step for him was to make wine. For this, his Uncaged series he teamed up with the resources of Delicato Family Wines and Napa Valley Winemaker John Killebrew, who grew up in California, developed a love for nature, gardening, cooking, and music at an early age. As a winemaker, John is able to stay immersed in nature. Working in partnership with Zac and accessing the Delicato's superb quality grapes he's able to create wines with true character and style that offer a lot for a little. This Proprietary Red blends Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Verdot, Malbec, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon into a smooth but layered wine with notes of blueberry, cassis, cedar, black cherry and baking spices. It's mouth filling, with supple tannins good balance and a lingering finish. It aged 9 months in one-third new French and American oak barrels. Whether or not you're a music lover, you're sure to be a fan of this latest composition from Zac Brown.
This was given as a baby gift because the parents graduated from Vanderbilt where Zac Brown often performed in his fledgling days. I favor a blend and a pretty big red wine, so this one fit the bill. It is very fruit forward, almost plummy, but we all enjoyed giving it a try. (I was glad to have been there when it was delivered!) I would like to try the Z Alexander Brown cab next as I understand it is quite nice - and also quite fairly priced. Probably both wines (cab and blend) would benefit from some cellar time prior to drinking, as this one is pretty young.
