About Ziata 2013 Pinot Noir, Chenoweth Vyd., Russian River Valley

Karen Cakebread after years working with the family winery decided to branch off and start her own. She had a goal to create beautifully structured wines that reflect the vineyards they come from. She hired winemaker Jennifer Williams who's a rising star in Napa Valley. For this Pinot Noir she sourced the grapes from the Chenoweth Vineyard, located in Green Valley, the most desired sub-region of the Russian River Valley. The superb soil and climate of Green Valley make it ideal for growing Pinot Noir. Hot sunny days are followed by cool foggy nights that allow for the perfect balance of sugar and acidity development. The Chenoweth Vineyard is comprised of 30 acres that are divided into unique blocks, each based on the different microclimates within this single vineyard. Each block was planted to one of seven clones, selected specifically for that site. This broad mix of soils, climates and clones brings a diversity of aromas, flavors and characteristics unique to the Chenoweth Vineyard. This vintage is a blend of 115, 23 and 37 clones. The wine was fermented in stainless steel with a portion of whole clusters for added backbone. The wine aged in 40% New French oak barrels plus neutral oak.

The Wine Advocate scored this 91 points saying "Pale to medium ruby colored, the 2013 Pinot Noir Chenoweth Vineyard reveals a very pretty floral / potpourri perfume with a core of baking spices, earth, kirsch and dried cranberries. Opulent, full-bodied, plush and complex, it offers loads of decadent spicy flavors and great length. Drinking beautifully with now, it should cellar for another 7-8 years."

and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 92 points saying "This satisfyingly full-bodied, dense wine offers a wealth of baked strawberry complemented by a fistful of clove, cinnamon and Asian five-spice. The tannins are firm and supported by moderate acidity, while strong elements of forest floor and sauted mushroom add to the savory nature of it all." Extremely Limited!
