Von Strasser 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Diamond Mountain, Napa Valley
Rudy Von Strasser discovered a family connection to Eric de Rothschild, and he wrote a letter asking to do an internship at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Mr. Rothschild invited Rudy to work for the 1985 harvest as their first American intern. Upon completion, Rudy returned to Napa Valley in the spring of 1986 and became the enologist at Trefethen Winery and Vineyards and later he became the assistant winemaker in charge of production at Newton Vineyards. He purchased the Roddis estate on Diamond Mountain in 1989 and the Von Strasser label was born. Since then he has achieved unparalleled success as a Cabernet producer. Von Strasser Winery was named Wine & Spirits Magazine Winery of the Year for an unbelievable 13 times! This 2012 is a bold expression of Diamond Mountain District Cabernet. This is made from a blend of grapes from their six single vineyards. 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec, .5% Merlot and .5% Cabernet Franc aged in 100% French oak, 30% new. Wine & Spirits scored this 91 saying "Tense, black and smoky, this is almost tarry when first poured. That reductive blackness fades into a sleek wine over the course of two days, with bright cherry fruit and dark, juicy, cherry-skin tannins. Oak brings a rich, dark-roast coffee warmth, supporting the fruit tannins without masking them. Cellar this to serve with filet mignon."
