Brunello Riserva 2010 Poggio alle Mura, Castello Banfi
This is Castello Banfi's Riserva Brunello Di Montalcino bottling sourced entirely from the hillside vineyards that were the first planted on the estate in 1992, sloping down from the historic Poggio alle Mura Castle which crowns the estate. The grapes from this plot always show unique character and superior quality. The grape harvest is followed by a maceration of 12-14 days. Temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation takes place in the Horizon hybrid stainless steel and wood tanks. 90% of the wine is aged for 2 years in French oak barriques and the remaining 10% in large casks. Before release, the wine is bottle-aged for an additional 12 months. He Wine Advocate scored this 96 points saying "I'm confident this is the best wine (as a new release) I have tasted from Castello Banfi. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Alle Mura offers rich intensity with seamless integration between its primary fruit aromas and background oak shadings. It is distinguished by elegant tones of licorice, dark mineral and cola that are associated with the six-year aging process required of Brunello Riserva. The bouquet shows enormous depth and fluid nuances of spice and chocolate that add plumpness, opulence and softness. The wine shows a rich and well extracted mouthfeel that is impressive both in terms of consistency and persistence. A bright flash of acidity bodes well for this wine's future cellar evolution." and James Suckling scored it 99 points and said "This is very tannic and powerful with blueberries, blackberries and milk chocolate. Full body, firm tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows length and power. A wine for decades ahead. Greatest Banfi red ever. Better in 2018." Limited!!
