Grand Napa 2010 Proprietary Red Blend, Napa Valley
Here's a Great find! This 2010 Red Blend is showing all of the complex, layered nuance that that vintage is known for. The Wine Advocate called it "An Epic Vintage" and Wine Spectator scored the 2010 vintage 96 points saying "Cool, steady year; wines show exceptional quality, tight, dense and layered." The one downside to 2010 is that it was a very small crop, so it's a rare day indeed that you come across one like this. A unique blend of 56% Sangiovese, 29% Zinfandel and 15% Petite Sirah. As the makers of Prisoner showed us, the blending of Napa Valley's "other" grapes can bring a wine of unique and impressive character. And of course we know how outstanding Sangiovese blends can be from the great Super Tuscan wines. Winemaker Tom Rees who has crafted wines at Charles Krug, Rombauer and St. Supery used these guiding ideas when crafting this wine. He sourced the grapes from around Napa Valley including some of the most prestigious appellations like Rutherford, Oakville, Atlas Peak and Oak Knoll. All the lots were vinified separately and aged in French oak barrels. The additional bottle age at the winery has given this wine a silky softness that only years can bring. It shows black currant, black cherry, cranberry and hints of tobacco. Rich and deeply nuanced it's drinking beautifully and should continue to deliver supple, enjoyable drinking through the next 3-5 years or more. We grabbed all that was available so we could offer it to our Wine Express customers at very attractive price. Don't miss it, it's limited!
Give this just a few minutes to open up and your patience will be rewarded! Wonderful balance of developed red fruit, toasted almonds, sandalwood and spice carry over from the nose to the palate. On the palate some tobacco and floral notes come in adding finesse to this gem. It is drinking so well as is, but will still improve over the next few years as well.
After it opened up it was very smooth and delightful to drink. Not quite as full bodied as a good cab but close. A very good value. I would definitely recommend it to others and am only sorry I didn't buy more for myself.
I found the wine to be very thin on the palate upon tasting. Later, there was a feeling of some structure but the overall impression was not a positive one. I am truly surprised since I have never before been so disappointed in a wine ordered from you. I know it happens but when I served this 2010 Grand Napa Proprietary Red Blend to several of my wine enthusiast friends, the reaction was the same.
