Anthonij Rupert 2008 Red Blend, Coastal Region, South Africa
A rare and exceptional Bordeaux style blend from South Africa, The vineyards for this specific blend were chosen from the estate's best sites in the Franschhoek Valley. Grapes were picked by hand, placed into small boxes and transported to the cellar in a refrigerated truck. In the cellar, the whole berries were manually double-sorted and then gravity-fed into wooden fermenters. Each batch was cold soaked for a few days and then slowly brought up to temperature. Fermentation takes place naturally. The wines were aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak, bottled unfiltered and bottle-aged for 24 months. Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "A big, broad, muscular style, with a loamy note that underscores the dark plum, steeped currant and crushed fig fruit. A backdrop of espresso, leather and ganache gives this heft and dimension, while the fruit stretches out through the finish, where an iron detail chimes in. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2016 through 2020." and International Wine Report scored it 94 saying "The 2008 red blend from Anthony Rupert is composed of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It opens with fantastic aromas of black cherries and cassis woven together with tobacco, chestnut and a savory edge. On the palate this possesses a full body with a soft, velvety texture and well integrated tannins, making for a gorgeous mouthfeel. It remains well balanced through the finish where notes of sweet cassis and tobacco linger on. This is already drinking exceptionally well, and I expect it to continue to do so for years to come. (Best 2015-2023)"
