Mercer Canyons 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington State
Mercer Estates is a family owned winery in Washington State's Columbia Valley. The foundation vineyards of Mercer Estates lie in the idyllic Horse Heaven Hills appellation, on the same land the family has farmed since 1886. The fruit for this wine is grown at their acclaimed Spice Cabinet and Dead Canyon vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills. The fruit is exposed to dappled sunlight, allowing for uniform ripening and flavor development. Well balanced crop levels create wines with great depth and concentration. The grapes were double sorted, first in the vineyard then again at the winery on sorting tables. The fruit was not crushed in order to preserve as much whole-berry as possible. At the winery, individual lots were fermented in stainless steel tanks. Twice daily pumpovers allowed gentle extraction of color and tannins. After draining the wine and pressing the skins, the wine was racked to a blend of French and American oak barrels where it aged in barrel for 17 months before being blended together for bottling. 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Syrah. This rich red was awarded a Gold Medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The wine shows aromas of ripe black fruit with a hint of cassis. The bold fruit carries through in the mouth. Barrel aging the wine brings hints of warm baking spices and adds depth and complexity. Powdery tannins give structure to the wine while maintaining an elegant, balanced mouthfeel. This wine shows great expression of the terroir of the Horse Heaven Hills at at tremendous value!
Hats off to Mercer for crafting this forward, balanced and flat out enjoyable Cab. Classic WA Cab fruit character with notes of baking spice, bakers chocolate and oak on the nose and palate. Notable acidity makes this quite a food friendly option as well, serious value here.
