About Alta 2014 Quatreaux Red Blend, Napa Valley

Alta means height in Spanish and perfectly describes the mountainside site of Alta Vineyard in the Atlas Peak district of Napa Valley. The dramatic estate sits at 1700 feet above the Valley and provides fruit for owners Fred and Nina Oliai's own limited Alta releases. Here, warm daytime temperatures are moderated by early shading and breezes from both San Francisco Bay to the south and the Delta to the east. Optimal conditions for growing intense, focused Cabernet Sauvignon based wines. Vintage 2014 represents the second “Quatreaux” release. It is a blend of four classic Bordeaux varietals grown on the mountainsides of four exceptional Napa Valley estates. All the grapes were harvested on the same day. The Cabernet Sauvignon came off their own Alta Vineyard; the Merlot from Stagecoach Vineyard, the Cabernet Franc from Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Petit Verdot from Greenwood in Calistoga. The four varietals, each at peak ripeness, were co-fermented with native yeasts in an open top tank, creating a sublime, medium body meritage, 35% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot. After fermentation, the wine was aged for twenty months in French oak, 55% new. Only 550 cases were produced. Robert Parker said "It is a charming, midweight, somewhat Bordeaux-like red with dark ruby/purple color, nice, uplifted red and black fruits in the aromatics, a soft, savory mouthfeel, no real hint of oak and a medium-bodied, lush finish. It builds up its charm and interest slowly, but firmly. This is an attractive wine for drinking over the next 7-10 years."
