Bodega Volcanes only produces wines of Reserva quality or above. Volcanes is a premium project within Grupo Vinos del Pacífico (Viña Undurraga Holding). The wines come from vineyards that contain volcanic soils and reflect the unique minerality of each site. Chile has over 2,900 volcanoes and vineyards located in different valleys across the country with deep sub-soils rich in volcanic matter help the vines withstand high temperatures, retain humidity and offer good drainage, bringing grapes that are vibrant and rich with great complexity.
This wine named after the ever-shifting tectonic plates and the unique geomorphology of Chile that causes eruptions and originally led to the formation of the Andes range and the volcanoes. Grapes are sourced from Chile's Valle Central; Grenache (45%)from the Rapel Valley, Petite Sirah (38%) from Valle del Maipo and Mourvedre (17%) from Valle del Maule. The wine aged 12 months in 20% new French oak barrels.
Wine Advocate scored this 90 points saying "The Mediterranean red blend 2017 Tectonia Grenache Petite Sirah Mourvedre is a 45/40/15 blend of the three grapes grown in different valleys (Rapel, Maipo and Maule). It has ripe notes of wild berries and aromatic herbs and comes through as balsamic and juicy, with some notes of esparto grass and other Mediterranean herbs, reflecting the varieties and 2017 weather. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins and a serious mouthfeel. Only 1,000 bottles produced."
Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an Editors' Choice and scored it 92 points saying "This blend of Garnacha, Petite Sirah and Mourvèdre is cool and smoky on the nose, with convincing black-fruit aromas. A big but fresh palate houses plum, blueberry and chocolaty spice flavors, while the finish stays toasty. It can age for years to come; drink through 2025."
