In 1999 The Catena Family of Argentina and The Baron de Rothschilds of Lafite Rothschild combined forces to create Bodegas Caro in The Mendoza region. The focus was on producing a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Caro red is a the flagship wine and this wine, Amancaya Gran Reserva is the more approachable and affordable second wine from the estate. 70% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% new.
James Suckling scored this 94 points saying "This shows blackberry, tobacco, coffee and iodine aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Polished, yet happily dense with creamy tannins and a long, savory finish."
The Wine Advocate scored this 91 points saying "The 2018 Amancaya, a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aims to combine the fruit and freshness of Malbec with the power and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon. It was partly matured in oak barrels and keeps a fruit-driven and ripe profile with a soft palate with very fine tannins."
