About Bodegas Montecillo 2009 Rioja Gran Reserva

Founded in 1874 in La Rioja Alta, in the region of Fuenmayor, Bodegas Montecillo is the third oldest winery in Rioja. Its quality has lasted over 135 successful years in wine production. This Gran Reserva is carefully fermented over 20 days at controlled temperature. The wine then aged for 26 months in French and American oak barrels followed by 36 months of bottle age to allow the tannins to soften and the flavors to gel.

The Wine Spectator scored it 90 points saying "A silky, supple texture carries modest but harmonious flavors of cherry, tobacco, leather and spice, supported by light tannins and balsamic acidity. Focused, in the traditional style."

and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "Baked berry and cherry aromas are ripe and come with accents of mocha, leather and caramel. This feels full but not heavy, with balance and cushion to the palate. Spiced black-fruit flavors show a tea-like note, while this is dry, spicy and a touch chocolaty on the finish. Drink through 2026."
