Cantina di Montalcino was founded in 1970 and it is the only cooperative winery in the Brunello area. Today it counts 94 members, small farms that own about 385 acres of vineyards, on average less than 5 acres each, located between 350 and 2000 feet above sea level. These are small growers that produce high quality grapes. They work with care and dedication. Produced in the traditional style this wine from the 2018 vintage displays the superb quality of their wines.
Winemaker's Notes
The color is a brilliant ruby red. Aromas of berries and black cherries, together with notes of plum, mushroom, bark and wood. Medium to full-bodied, with firm, smooth tannins and a long, intense finish. Structured and complete. It will evolve, becoming even richer and softer in 3-5 years.
James Suckling scored this 94 points saying, "Dark and toasty nose of dried cherries, truffles, dried earth, cloves, anise, charred bark and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Savory and compact with complex mushroom and spice notes on the lengthy, firm finish. Drink after 2023."
Jeb Dunnuck gave this 91 points saying, "The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a ruby/red color and opens to notes of raspberry preserve, crushed flowers, pine, and minty herbs. Medium-bodied, it's elegant on the palate, with fine tannins, a graceful midweight texture, and a clean finish. It's a graceful, very pretty wine. Drink 2024-2034."
