About Carlisle 2019 Zinfandel, Piner-Olivet Ranches, Russian River Valley
Mike Carlisle started with five gallons of Zinfandel in his kitchen. Over the next several years, he made a barrel of Zinfandel each vintage with the help of some friends and his wife, Kendall Carlisle. The results were so encouraging. they moved to Santa Rosa in Sonoma County to be closer to the “source”. By 1997 they were producing over 300 cases of “garage” wine, mostly vineyard designated old-vine Zinfandels, and winning numerous gold medals in amateur competitions.
This 2019 Piner-Olivet Ranches Zinfandel is blended nearly equal portions of Papera Ranch and Carlisle Vineyard. The wine was delicious but did they leave it at that? Heck no! they found that including a barrel each of Mancini, Montafi, and Saitone really kicked it up a notch or two. A blend of the five finest old-vine vineyards in the Piner-Olivet area of the Russian River Valley and a “reserve” wine in everything but name. Aged in all French oak, 11% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 695 cases were produced.
Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "A spirited red that recalls a briar patch, with wild berry, sweet anise and white pepper flavors that race along to a vibrant, zesty finish. Drink now through 2030."
