About Castelgiocondo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino, Frescobaldi
Our Italian Wine of the Year!
The Castelgiocondo estate is the Brunello estate owned by Marchesi di Frescobaldi. It lies on the southwestern slope of Montalcino, at elevations ranging from 600 to 1,200 feet. Diverse soils and ideal exposure bring beautiful ripeness and development to the indigenous Sangiovese Grosso. This wine is always a classic, and the outstanding 2016 vintage excels.
The 100% Sangiovese grapes were picked by hand and carefully selected after arriving in the cellar. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature with frequent pump-overs, particularly during the early stages. The wine was then aged in large oak casks, where it was able to mature, ripen and develop balance.
James Suckling scored this 95 points saying "Black-cherry and blackberry aromas with minerals and fresh flowers, following through to a full body with firm, silky tannins that are polished and intense. Lovely finesse and length. Drink after 2023."
Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 95 points saying "Eucalyptus, blue flower, baked plum and spice aromas shape the nose in this fragrant red. Full bodied and chewy, the savory palate delivers ripe black cherry, vanilla, licorice and espresso alongside tightly knit, velvety tannins. Drink 2023–2031."
Vinous scored this 93 points saying "Sour cherries, spiced orange and dusty dried flowers open in the glass, as the 2016 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino slowly blossoms. The textures are creamy, contrasted by cooling minerality and juicy acids, as tart red berries saturate under an air of sweet herbs and inner florals. This finishes dry yet long, with chewy tannins and remnants of crunchy red fruit. The 2016 Castelgiocondo needs some time to come together, yet it has all of the balance necessary to mature into a real beauty."
