About Chateau Chevalier Lagrezette 2016 Malbec, Cahors

Chevalier du Chateau Lagrézette grapes are sourced from 25-year-old estate vines from the second and third terraces above the Lot River in the historic wine region of Cahors where the Malbec grape originates. Parcel soils are gravel and clay with a base of Kimmeridgian limestone. Since 1989, internationally renowned enologist, Michel Rolland, has worked closely with the team at Lagrezette to produce the most expressive wines possible. Following a strict selection, the grapes are sorted manually in the winery before being crushed. A cold maceration for five days is set in motion to extract color and intense aromas and to assure the softening of the tannins. A blend of 90% Malbec and 10% Merlot, fermentation begins under a constant temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. A maceration of two to three weeks follows. 12 to 15 months of aging in 40% new oak barrels and the wine is bottled without fining or filtering.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 90 points saying "Malbec, Merlot and Tannat are the blend for this wine that is the closest Lagrezette has to a second wine. It is fragrant, full of red fruits cut with acidity and with balanced tannins. The wine can be drunk soon for its fine fruit, so just wait until 2019."

Jeb Dunnuck Scored this 92 points saying "The 2016 Chevalier du Château Lagrezette is a smoking value, and it’s great to see a top estate like this offer top notch quality at a great price. Deep purple-hued with notes of black and blue fruits, white pepper, leafy herbs, and tobacco, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a ripe, fleshy, mouthfilling texture, and a great finish. It doesn’t have the dimensions or sheer opulence of the top cuvée, but it’s beautifully balanced, has classic Malbec character, and is a classy wine that will evolve for 10-15 years."
