About Chateau de Macard 2016 Reserve, Bordeaux Superieur
A tremendous find! On a rocky plateau overlooking the Dordogne River, just upstream from Saint-Émilion, a parcel of Cabernet Franc vines up to 100 years old dig roots deep into the clay-limestone soils. The vines sit on the same south-facing clay and limestone slope as the greats of Saint-Émilion, a soil very suited to grape vines, with moderate water intake and mineral richness supplied by the limestone. Grapes from this vineyard are the core of Chateau de Macard Reserve.
Blended with 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon averaging 45 years of age all farmed biodynamically. These extremely healthy old vine grapes deliver concentrated and complex flavors to this under-the-radar Bordeaux Superieur. The grapes were given extended maceration up to 25 days and the wine aged 18 months, half in stainless steel tanks and half in oak barrels.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 90 points saying "Light tannins giving a tight structure to the red-berry flavors of this wine. It comes from a blend of 100-year-old Cabernet Franc vines with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine could age further and will be good from 2020."
International Wine Report scored it 92 points saying "The 2016 Château Macard 'Reserve' is an outstanding blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It opens up to inviting aromas of fresh dark cherries and dark berries that combine with nuances of burnt toast, tobacco and minerals. On the palate this displays a gorgeous medium body, with velvety tannins and a sleek, elegant texture that leads up to the pretty finish. This is absolutely delightful today and should go on to offer a moderate drinking window that could span more than a decade."
