About Chateau Kirwan 2015 Margaux, Cru Classe

The history of Château Kirwan  has been built up from generation to generation since the 18th century, beginning with a marriage in 1760 of an Irish shopkeeper, Mark Kirwan and the daughter of Sir John Collingwood, “Lord of Lasalle", an English merchant, who was one of the first Bordeaux négociants.
The wine was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson when he was Ambassador to France in 1855 it was classified as the leading Third Growth of the Medoc and the 16th greatest Bordeaux wine. Today the estate is run by the Henri Schyler family, the roughly 100 acre vineyard of Chateau Kirwan is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

This wine from the outstanding 2015 vintage is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet-franc and 5% Petit Verdot, all of the grape were hand picked and hand sorted at the winery. The wine aged 18 months in 50% new oak barrels.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 93 points saying "The 2015 Château Kirwan showed beautifully and is just another data point pointing to Margaux being the star of the Médoc. It boasts a deep ruby/plum color as well as thrilling notes of black raspberries, toasted bread, Asian spices and lead pencil. With subtle background oak, a ripe, opulent texture, sweet tannin, and notable purity and elegance, give bottle 3-4 years in the cellar and enjoy through 2035+."

and Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an Editors' Choice and scored it 96 points saying "This rich wine is full of fruit and structured with layers of tannin. It's also stylish and elegant, with a suave texture that is already attractive. Black fruits mix with the structure to give a wine that will age well. Drink from 2026."
