Magnum 1.5 Liter

Here is a rare Magnum of 2005 Bordeaux from a fine producer. Chateau Simard has an enviable address on the sunny southern slopes of Saint-Emilion. Surrounded by the region’s first growth vineyards, Chateau Simard’s vineyard has excellent exposure and predominantly clay soil mixed with sand and gravel. Chateau Simard's classical, refined style can be attributed not only to its fine vineyard location, but also to its traditional winemaking practices and distinctive aging program. The blend each year reflects the vineyard makeup of Merlot blended with Cabernet Franc. Elegant and balanced upon release, Chateau Simard expresses its deep roots in Bordeaux' famous Right Bank."

Ch. Simard has been in the Vauthier family, owners of Ch. Ausone, since 1954 and its chalky, gravely soils produce wines particularly elegant and expressive of its fine terroir. Cellar Master Thierry Lezin and Vineyard Manager Laurent Vallet work together to produce excellent wines from vines with an average age of 20 years.

This wine from the outstanding 2005 vintage with an overall rating of 99 points for Saint-Emilion wines has been aging gently in these magnum bottles and are now at a peak of perfection.

On release Wine & Spirits Magazine scored this 92 points saying "Claude Mazière, who took over his family’s vineyard in 1954, took a different approach to the market than many of his neighbors on the hillside outside the walls of St-Emilion. He made his wine a restaurant staple here in the US by releasing it with ten years of age. When he passed away in 2008, his nephew, Alain Vauthier, of Château Ausone, purchased the property, with plans to eventually sell the wines somewhat earlier, with five years of age. Meanwhile, this 2005 is the current release, matured to silken elegance, still holding some fresh floral notes while the spicy, gamey flavors last, integrated and lovely. Enjoy it with roast squab."
