About Chateau Violette 2016 Moulis en Medoc
Named Our 2019 Value Bordeaux Wine of the Year!
Want to drink a Medoc Bordeaux made by the man who's had his hand on all four Medoc First Growths; Chateau Latour, Chateau, Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Margaux as well as dozens of other Classified Growths? Too expensive, right? WRONG!! Here's Chateau Violette, a tiny estate in the oft overlooked Medoc appellation of Moulis.
The smallest appellation Medoc, Moulis lies between Margaux and Saint Julien. Château Violette is a property of just 10 prime acres with a mix of clay/limestone, sand and gravel soils. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are planted half and half. The vines are mature averaging 40 years of age.
The two sisters that own the estate hired superstar oenologist Eric Boissenot to create their final blend for this outstanding 2016. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot. Hand harvested and carefully sorted, the grapes fermented in stainless steel and aged 12 months in French oak barrels.
This was awarded a Gold Medal in the Concours de Bordeaux and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 90 points saying "Almost equally balanced between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this wine is still firmly structured. Toasty wood-aging flavors combine with black currant fruitiness to give a rich wine with a good future. Drink from 2022."
