About Clos Vougeot 2006 Denis Mortet

A supremely talented vigneron, Arnaud Mortet is routinely praised for his work in the vineyards, even by his peers. Machines are no longer used in any sites; everything is done by hand here, and horses are now employed to plough all 1er and Grand Cru vineyards in order to minimize soil compaction. After the tragic death in 2006 of his legendary father, Denis, Arnaud took full control of the domaine, ably carrying on Denis’ dream of making refined, elegant wines. Arnaud’s wines are reaching new levels, as the winemaker looks back to more traditional viniculture techniques. He keeps the yield very low, uses gentler macerations and a smaller percentage of new oak, and has increased the severity of fruit selection. A perfectionist by nature, and driven by a desire to honor his father’s legacy, Arnaud is making superbly finessed and precise wines, as he continues to evolve this domaine.

Arnaud Mortet says "2006 was a super vintage! The only negative thing was the hail that damaged the Chambertin and the Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru. Otherwise we were able to make some top-notch wines. The summer was marvellous with sunshine and light rainfall at the right moment. The wines are silky with fully melted tannins."

Back in 2009 on release Steve Tanzer scored this 91+. The review is on Vinous now and reads "Good full medium red. Complex, expressive nose offers redcurrant, plum, minerals, iron and menthol, with higher-pitched crushed violet and blackberry notes emerging with air. Lush and sweet on entry, then quite closed and youthfully medicinal in the mid-palate, despite the impression of almost decadent sweetness conveyed by the nose and a rather suave, fine-grained texture. Best today on the building spice-and-menthol finish, where the wine's sweetness becomes apparent again. This is hiding more than it's showing today." and the Wine Advocate scored it 92 saying "Cedar, tobacco, roasted meats, and lightly-cooked black raspberry and cherry in the nose of Mortet's 2006 Clos Vougeot presage its performance on a quite texturally refined – indeed, almost plush – palate. This evinces a sense of extract-richness and sheer density while displaying elegance and lift. The sense of fruit sweetness here is subtle, allowing the marrow-like dimension of carnal richness to take the lead in a long, rewarding finish. I would give this a few years in bottle and count on 10-12 of excellent performance. I find the quality here noteworthy considering that this appellation has nearly always – even in 2005 – struck me as something of a step-child in that respect like Mortet's Chambolle."
