The Jumilla region in Spain's southeast has garnered a stellar reputation for its old vine grapes, particularly Monsatrell and the dense, dark, concentrated wines it produces. Well we've managed to source one that really bolsters that reputation. Ego Bodegas was started in 2011 specifically to make outstanding wines from Jumilla's old vines. This warm continental region gets over 3000 hours of sunshine a year, ideal for ripening these rich red grapes.
This wine is the result of a rigorous selection process, choosing only the best grapes from the Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon variety. The grapes were harvested in the third week of October at their optimum ripening point. The grapes corresponding to each variety were macerated and fermented for 20/30 days at a controlled temperature. It has spent 12 months in new French and American Oak Barrels.
Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "This red is sleek and solid, in the modern style. Bright cherry, berry and currant flavors mingle with licorice, black tea and mineral notes, giving way to a floral and minerally finish. The firm tannins are well-integrated and juicy acidity keeps this lively. Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah."
