Here's a stunning Italian red from Piedmont, made with grapes from mature vines. Franco Amoroso is a small producer of excellent quality wines. In Asti, Barbera get's the royal treatment; prime vineyard locations and hands-on attention and care. This wine is a DOCG Superiore which is reserved for the biggest, most intense wines. Il Pendio means the hillside and this single vineyard Barbera is produced from 35 year old vines on the Amoroso family hillside vineyards in Asti. Aged 12 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels (6 more than required for Superiore) and then 6 months in the bottle before release. Darkly colored and richly concentrated with tones of cherry and blackberry fruit. Acidity and medium fine tannins give structure around the core of intense fruit.
James Suckling scored this 91 points saying "Shows depth and richness with strawberry and cherry character and hints of hazelnuts. Firm, medium-to full-bodied palate, silky tannins and lots of fruit. Drink now."
