About G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo, Albe

In 1971, Aldo Vajra, was one of the earliest to adopt organic farming in Piedmonte. Vineyards have been nurtured, and soil preserved, by grassing and spontaneous cover crop for almost 50 years now. They are sustainable and organic certified. Intense research is also placed into monitoring and improving the biodiversity of both flora and fauna not just in the vineyards, but also in the winery fields and forests.

Albe Barolo is a blend of grapes from vineyards with exposures that range from south-south-east to south-west, at high elevation between 1200 and 480 1500 feet above sea level. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks, with gentle punch down and cap pump-overs, and lasted 25 days on average. Malolactic was held in stainless steel, the following spring. This wine aged for approximately 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 40, 50 and 75 hL and was racked and blended right before the bottling.

The Wine Advocate scored this 94 points saying "If you were to consider the entire portfolio of wines made in the Barolo appellation, this wine always stands in its own little corner. Albe is a brand on its own, and it represents one of the most versatile, accessible and well-priced Baroli to emerge from the appellation. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Albe sets off on the right foot, offering forthcoming intensity with forest fruit, wild cherry, crushed stone and blue flowers. Winemaking is straightforward in stainless steel, and the wine finishes in Slavonian oak casks."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 94 points saying "Aromas of woodland berry, new leather, camphor and pressed rose waft out of the glass. Juicy and delicious, the chewy palate doles out succulent Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and white pepper. Polished tannins and fresh acidity give it an immediate appeal but this also offers several years of drinking pleasure. Drink through 2028."
