Aged 12 months in French oak this Merlot scored 93 points from James Suckling!
Along the Tuscan seaboard extending south from Livorno lies the Maremma. For centuries a marshland, it has established itself over the last quarter century as one of Italy's most prestigious wine regions. It is in this region that Angelo Gaja has begun his new winemaking venture. In 1996, along the road between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, Gaja began planting 150 acres of vineyards, primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but also Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This 2015 is 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah and 10% Sangiovese aged 12 months in French oak, then blended and aged for several months in the bottle before release. James Suckling scored this 93 points saying "An extremely floral and almost pinot-noir-like wine with fresh rose petals, wild strawberries and red cherries. Medium to full body, fine tannins, a pretty line of acidity and a succulent finish." and the Wine Advocate scored it 91 points and said "Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese are the backbone of the 2015 Promis. Compared to the Bolgheri Rosso Magari, this wine delivers a slightly easier approach with a savory flavor profile. Dried berries and cassis are followed by leather, tobacco and a touch of black tar. This wine is a hair more advanced in terms of its evolution too. The finish offers a moment of austerity with smoky end notes."
