About Gary Farrell 2016 Chardonnay, Russian River Selection, Russian River Valley
The previous vintage was Wine Enthusiast Magazine's #1 Wine of the Year!! Beginning in the late 1970s, Gary Farrell was working with seminal Russian River Valley vintners such as Davis Bynum, Joe Rochioli, Tom Dehlinger and Robert Stemmler. He made his first wine under the Gary Farrell label in 1982 and built the winery into one of the most acclaimed producers of small-lot Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the Russian River Valley. This latest release, 2016 Chard is true to form. Sourced from several prime vineyards around the Russian River Valley AVA, including Westside Farms, Bacigalupi Vineyard, Olivet Lane Vineyard, Rochioli Vineyard, Allen Vineyard and Martinelli Vineyard. The wine was aged 9 months in 30-40% new French oak. No scores yet for this but since the last two vintages both received 95 points from Wine Enthusiast, and 2016 was deemed an overall better vintage we expect high praise. This wine was aged 9 months in 35% new French oak. The wine shows mouthwatering acidity, this blend of unique Russian River Valley vineyards offers an enticing bouquet of citrusy herbs, zesty lemons and subtle baking spices. Expressive layers of aromas offer a playful nose of bright citrus, floral notes and under ripe tropical fruits. The palate opens up with a gentle kiss of lemon verbena, white peach, tart pineapple and an undertone of buttery shortbread, all the while sustaining its acute yet elegant structure.
