About Gehricke 2021 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley
Gehricke is August Sebastiani's new boutique line. Desiring to get back to his roots the Gehricke wines are all small lot wines, sourced from the finest vineyards that bring a true expression of the terroir of premium wine regions in Sonoma County. This Zin is a prime example. 95% Zinfandel and 5% Petite Sirah sourced from the exceptional the iron-rich soil of the Ponzo Vineyard and aged 18 months in French oak barrels. Only 1,100 cases were produced.
The 2019 growing season began about two weeks earlier than usual. The Russian River Valley experienced some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed grapes to mature gradually. Fruit ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended cool growing season which produced wines full of flavor, fresh acidity and balance.
With a deep magenta hue, fruit forward aromas leap from the glass with blackberry cobbler, ripe red cherries, milk chocolate, smooth leather and a touch of white pepper. Similar in fashion, the palate boasts flavors of raspberry jam and ripe red plums surrounded by a juicy acidity. The finish is round and lasting, driven by a complex oak spice.
