Giovanni Rosso is not simply a Barolo producer, but a Serralunga producer with around a dozen different plots within the commune. These vineyard plots include some of the most historically important areas such as La Serra, Broglio, Damiano and Vigna Rionda (each of which is mentioned in a document dated 30th May 1694) as well as Cerretta and Sorano. These plots are farmed as organically as possible, using no artificial chemical treatments such as fertilizers, insecticides or weed-killers. Harvesting is 100% by hand, as is pruning and tilling of the soil beneath the vines. Green harvesting is carried out as necessary and they allow plant growth between the rows of vines to encourage soil health and diversity in the vineyards.
This wine reflects the diversity of expression found in Nebbiolo grapes grown in these different micro-climates. The fermentation in concrete tanks lasts up to 25 days with daily pumping over of the wine mass. Aging is in 50hl large barrels of Fontainebleau Forest oak (from 18 to 36 months according to the vintage and the vineyard of provenance).
The Wine Advocate scored this 93 points saying “The Giovanni Rosso estate makes some very pretty wines from the Serralunga d'Alba subzone in the Barolo appellation. This classic wine, the 2015 Barolo, provides a good introduction to the distinct taste profile shared by the two single-vineyard wines, Cerretta and Serra, (also reviewed here.) However, this wine hails from the warm and sunny 2015 vintage and supplies a greater kick of soft cherry fruit and rich concentration when compared to the more streamlined, long-term 2016 vintage. Those dark primary fruit aromas, the acidity and the tannic imprint are all beautifully measured to the enhanced intensity of this pretty and well-priced 2015 Barolo.”
James Suckling scored this 93 points saying “Dried oranges, rose petals, citrus and fresh herbs. Medium to full body, grainy tannins and a spice-driven, flavorful finish. Drink in 2021.”
Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 92 points saying “Camphor, wild berry, blue flower and brown spice aromas lead the way. The taut palate shows cranberry, pomegranate, baking spice and a hint of chopped mint alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity.”
Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying “Fresh, offering cherry, strawberry, rose and white pepper aromas and flavors. Graceful, yet with ample grip on the long, dense and dusty finish. Captures the best of the vintage. Best from 2022 through 2040.”
