About Heir Apparent 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Napa Valley

Heir Apparent wines are a celebration of the long life and ageabilty of fine Napa Valley Cabernet. Most of us get our hands on these big, juicy, mouthfilling wines and we can't refrain from popping the corks and indulging. But there's a downside to to immediate gratification and that is that we miss out on the enjoyment of uncorking a perfectly aged gem that's got all of the richness we expected from the beginning but also the layers of complex flavor that build over time along with the supreme silkiness that emerges when the tannins have finally resolved. The makers of Heir Apparent  say sure, enjoy some now,  but our wines are made for you to put some away and let it age gracefully so that you can inherit that full experience.

Grapes for this 2016 were sourced primarily from Rutherford vineyards with a small addition of fruit from Yountville. The wine fermented in open-top 1-ton fermenters with twice daily punch-downs. The wine stayed 3 weeks on the skins resulting a rich extraction. It was aged two years in 40% new Seguin Moreau French oak barrels and 60% neutral French oak barrels.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 91 points saying "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Heir Apparent (90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot) offers more richness and depth. Plums, blackcurrants, dark chocolate, and scorched earth notes all emerge from this rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated and focused Cabernet that needs 2-4 years of bottle age and will drink well for 15+ years."

The Wine Advocate scored this 92 saying "Blended of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Heir Apparent Napa Valley has a deep garnet-black color and lifted black cherries, roses and star anise scents with leather, tea, incense and red and black currants at the core. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and chewy yet with a great core of muscular fruit, finishing savory."
