Heitz Vineyards has a well-earned reputation for producing high quality, distinctive Napa Valley wines, particularly Cabernets. The style is always full-bodied, well-extracted with immense structure. One of the unique aspects to their production is the length of time that they age their Cabs before release. This Cab is barrel aged for full three years; two years in French oak barriques and a year in large American oak tanks before bottling. This allows the tannins to soften and the flavors to coalesce, resulting in a wine that shows its full expression on release. Decanter Magazine scored this 92 points saying "Heitz's just-released 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet reveals aromas of red plum, creamy cassis, tobacco and pencil shaving. On the palate the wine is fresh and savoury, with refined tannins (after a three-year elevage) and good concentration. One of the better values in California Cabernet."
and James Suckling scored it 93 saying "Lovely aromas of blackcurrants and dark chocolate with hints of flowers. Ever so subtle. Medium full body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy finish. Shows tension and focus. Drink or hold."
