About Hickinbotham 2017 Shiraz, Brooks Road, McLaren Vale

Alan David Hickinbotham and his family planted this 190  acre vineyard in 1971 in Australia's McLaren Vale with Bordeaux and Rhone varieties, and a particular focus on Cabernet Sauvignon on dry-farmed, terraced blocks. Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard covers a steep territory from the ridgetops of Clarendon to the Onkaparinga River below. Since its establishment in 1971, the vineyard has played a vital role in Australia’s wine heritage, supplying fruit for many of Australia’s most iconic wines including Penfolds Grange, Eileen Hardy and Clarendon Hills Astralis. It was not until 2012 that fruit from the vineyard was bottled under its own label, Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard when the vineyard was sold to the Jackson Family. They brought over winemaking wizard Chris Carpenter and his 100 point skills to work his magic with Clarendon WInemaker Peter Fraser, on the fruit from this legendary 100 point Vineyard.

For this 2017 Shiraz grapes from select blocks were hand picked, 50% destemmed and 50% whole berry sorted into open-top fermenters.  4 day cold soak, plunged 3 times daily, was followed by fermentation of 2 weeks on skins. The must was then basket pressed and free run and pressings kept separate. Aged over 15 months prior to bottling, individual barrel selection was undertaken from a total of 7 separate lots. Aging was in a selection of Burgundy coopered barrels.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 95 points saying "Thanks in part to the relatively cool year, this is a wine that manages refinement, restraint and beautiful expression of place. The nose is a neatly woven basket of aromas: crushed flowers, red and blue fruit, pepper, mint and cigar box. The palate is full figured and highly textural. There’s a line of powdery, spicy, ultrafine tannins and a streak of high-end oak. Set up for a long and beautiful life, Drink from 2022–2045,"

James Suckling scored this 93 points saying "Dark plums and spice with toasty oak on offer, leading to a plush, fluid and rich texture, as well as a very fleshy and fresh, compact feel at the finish. Dark berries and cherries and a sleek, assertive tannin edge complete the picture. Drink or hold."

Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "Offers polished notes of toffee, baking spices, tobacco and cedar, featuring a core of plush, plump plum, kirsch and blackberry flavors that are succulent, juicy and polished. Shows seamless integration on the finish, with a chorus of flavors and velvety tannins. Drink now through 2035."
