About Hook or Crook Cellars 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Napa Valley
When I first tasted this wine I was impressed. This Cab shows real class and style. It was Napa Cab through and through. But when I heard the price I was shocked. I didn't understand how a wine this good could be had for so little. Next thing I knew they put me on the phone with John Healy the winemaker. John has been around the Valley a long time. He owned Liparita and Hoops wineries, wines I have enjoyed immensely in the past. John explained that he sourced the juice from various wineries in the valley that he's friends with, more than one of which has turned out a 100 point wine. Unfortunately I can't share the names with you or the incredible price would suddenly disappear. Suffice it to say John did the blend on this Cab and it's all been aged 18 months in French oak with a medium toast. And it delivers.
It's rich and round, brimming with black cherry, black currants, subtle hints of vanilla and a touch of dark chocolate. There's a seamlessness to the structure, offering mouthfilling richness and backbone in a smooth stylish package. The sweet berry notes linger on the finish. Drinking beautifully now but it has makeup and concentration to reward cellaring.
