About J. Lohr 2017 Pure Paso Proprietary Red, Paso Robles

To quote winemaker Steve Peck this is "A milestone wine for J. Lohr that harnesses our history with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah from Paso Robles.” Grapes are sourced  largely  from  J. Lohr's Shotwell Vineyard in the cooler El Pomar District of Paso Robles where the climate is strongly influenced by marine air drawn in from the Pacific Ocean. This ranch is predominantly  planted to Cabernet Sauvignon on calcereous soils with slopes reaching a challenging 25%. The  Petite Sirah hails from their Home Ranch in the warmer Paso Robles Estrella District. This climate is ideal for this heat loving variety where the  grape  clusters reach a luxurious level of maturity.

The blend is 70.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.5% Petite Sirah, 2% Merlot .5% Petit Verdot and .5% Malbec. The wine aged 18 months in French and American oak barrels.

Tasting Panel Magazine scored this 92 points saying "A nod to J. Lohr’s 30-plus years of grape-growing in Paso Robles, this inaugural release is a royal purple–hued blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec that offers aromas of cedar, blueberry, and ripe plum. A silky beauty aged 18 months in barrel (20% new), it features dusty tannins that develop into a juicier texture as the wine opens up, leaving behind lip-smacking notes of ripe black fruit and dried violets."

Wine Enthusiast Magazine named this an Editors' Choice and scored it 93 points saying "For being a larger production winery, J. Lohr continually produces lush and delicious wines that continue to define the Paso Robles potential. This new blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec begins with strawberry, violet and baking spice on the nose, while the palate’s creamy mouthfeel carries mocha, cappuccino, caramel and black cherry flavors. There’s just enough tannic firmness to the lush profile."

This was awarded 94 points and a Platinum Award in the 2020 Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition. They said "J. Lohr is firing on all cylinders it usually mean there is an exceptional value in the offing.  So true with this 2017 Pure Paso blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot.  Rich and dense, with impressive length on the palate, Pure Paso delivers a complex array of red and black fruits, a healthy does of wood spice and smooth, supple tannins.  Pure deliciousness!
