About Jean-Luc Colombo 2015 Cornas, La Louvee

Innovation, passion and dedication are what drives Jean-Luc and Anne Colombo, whose contributions to Rhône Valley winemaking is unparalleled. A devotee of the Syrah grape, Colombo’s innovative approach in the northern appellation of Cornas is nothing short of revolutionary. Today, Jean-Luc Colombo’s wines express the typicity of their terroir with elegance and character. The Colombo winery is based in Cornas, the smallest appellation in the Rhône Valley. Covering only 325 acres, it is nonetheless highly delineated with incredibly diverse microclimates that make an extraordinary impact on the profile of the wines. With a strong Mediterranean influence, summers here are warm. Ancient vineyards are found mostly on steep, south-facing terraced slopes. Decomposed granite soils and stressed growing conditions greatly contribute to the quintessential quality and character of Cornas wines.

Cornas AOC has strict laws. Irrigation is not permitted and maximum yields are just over two tons per acre. It is one of the few appellations in the world dedicated to Syrah. This wine, is from La Louvée (The She-Wolf), a vineyard planted with very old Syrah vines – up to 70 years old, protected by a forest of cedar and live oak trees. The parcel is located in the heart of the Cornas granitic slope and benefits from a South-East facing exposure. Grapes are hand-harvested and de-stemmed. Fermentation takes places in stainless steel tanks with a 30-day maceration. The wine is aged for 22 months in oak barrels 15% in new, 85% in one to three-year-old oak barrels, then fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded this a Cellar Selection and scored it 95 points saying "While primary on the nose, fresh cherry and berry notes take on a smokier depth on the palate. It’s an intensely ripe but elegant wine, with supple curves anchored by brisk acidity and dense, penetrating tannins. The finish is long and lavish. Still taut, it should open and expand from 2019–2030.

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 97 points saying "Coming from the steep, granite soils of the La Côte Lieu-dit, the 2015 Cornas La Louvée spent 23 months in 15% new French oak. It’s seriously good, and while it has a slightly modern character, it packs tons of classic Cornas fruit as well as notes of saddle leather, bouquet garni, graphite and cracked pepper. Thick, unctuous and incredibly concentrated, with sweet tannin, it's the finest wine I've tasted from this estate to date. There are only 400 cases but it’s well worth the extra effort to track down. Hat’s off to the young Laure Colombo!"  On SALE!
