Gran Selezione Chianti from a historic estate
  • 94 Points
  • High altitude vineyards
  • 2 Years in new French oak
  • "Silky and aromatic"
  • " bouquet that shows layers of blackberry, dried cherry, sweet spice and toasted clove,"
Lamole is a historic site where grapes have been cultivated since Roman times. Located in the village of Lamole near Greve, where the high altitude provides an important tempering effect to the maturing grapes, adding complexity and balance. The Lamole di Lamole vineyards occupy south-facing plots at various altitudes between 1150 and 1800 feet above sea level. The soil is mainly the typical Chianti macigno, composed of alberese and galestro, which is rich in manganese and iron but very permeable. Consequently, vines must seek water deep below the surface, assimilating many minerals in the process.

For this Gran Selezione temperature-controlled fermentation lasts for around 20 days. This is followed by a long period of maturation (around 2 years) in new French oak barrels. Sangiovese is blended with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Spectator Scored this 94 points saying "Silky and aromatic, this version features black currant, raspberry, violet and graphite flavors, allied to an elegant frame. The tannins are firm, yet well-proportioned, with freshness and drive on the lingering finish. Best from 2023 through 2040."

James Suckling scored this 92 points saying "A tangy, fruity red with plum and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Slightly bitter finish, adding complexity."

The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying "With a bouquet that shows layers of blackberry, dried cherry, sweet spice and toasted clove, the Lamole di Lamole 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto di Campolungo is a modern, thickly extracted and heavier style of Chianti Classico with more fruit weight and a bigger oak presence. I'd say that these characteristics move the wine toward the more international side of the Chianti Classico style spectrum, and the elegance and age-worthiness of the wine are intact."
