Here’s a great find. A gently aged Medoc Bordeaux from a solid vintage. Les Combelles Medoc is produced by the celebrated Univitis co-operative. The 2012 vintage was smaller than average and more successful for early-ripening Merlot and Cab Franc, but those varietals excelled with good ripeness and fruit character. So, what makes this wine stand out is the sourcing. Since the co-op has an extraordinary number of small growers contributing, they were able to carefully select only the best quality grapes from all of the various lots to go into this Medoc AOC.
A blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot aged in oak, this wine has matured gently in the bottle and reached delightful stage of supple drinkability. It shows dried plums, black currants and a hint of woodsmoke on the nose. The palate is silky soft with plums, currants, dried cherry, smokiness and a touch of minerality on a medium-bodied frame. No further cellaring needed this is one to enjoy right now and over the next year or two. On Sale, so don’t miss it!
