About MacPhail 2016 Pinot Noir, Mardikian Estate, Sonoma Coast

With its first vintage in 2002, MacPhail created a cult following for their intensely flavored power-packed Pinot Noirs. Now part of the celebrated Hess Family portfolio, WInemaker Matt Courtney has a simple goal:  capture the individuality of each vineyard site and let it express itself in your glass.  His focus is the vineyard, and he has worked with many MacPhail growers for years.  Celebrated for wines created for Arista, Marcassin and his own label, Ferren, he is well known for his wizardry with Pinot Noir.

Grapes for this wine are from their Estate vineyard. The Mardikian Estate Vineyard is located in the far reaches of the West Sonoma Coast –close to the town of Freestone, this site is often described as challenging and extreme. 10.4 acres were planted in 2008 to a careful selection of 8 clones and 2 rootstocks chosen to offer a distinct level of flavor complexity and intrigue. Steep slopes of well drained, fine sandy loam are often shrouded in a maritime blanket of fog that begins to burn off just about noon, which allows for extended hang time and builds in extra complexity to the wines. In its ninth year (and sixth vintage) the vineyard offers fruit from all eight blocks planted, with a resulting step up stylistically, offering a richer, more complex wine worthy of contemplation.

Grapes are 100% De-stemmed- and whole berries go into fermenting tanks. Fermentation is with 100% native yeasts and all clones are co-fermented in one tank. The wine then aged 11 months sur lie in 100% French oak, 38% new. Less than 400 cases were produced.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 92 points saying "This estate-grown wine is made in small amounts and is bursting with complexity. Tightly structured, it’s peppery, intense and tannic, with concentrated fruit flavors of pomegranate and cassis. A lingering note of black tea marks the finish. Enjoy from 2021–2026."

Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "Well-structured, with intense and rich-tasting forest floor notes accenting the dried red fruit and berry flavors. The creamy finish lingers with cocoa powder and spice elements. Drink now through 2022."

Jeb Dunnuck scored this 93+ saying "I loved the 2016 Pinot Noir Mardikian Estate Vineyard, and it comes from a vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and is a mix of clones, was destemmed, and spent 11 months in 38% new French oak. Beautiful sweet red fruits, passion fruit, Christmas spice, and orange rind notes all flow to a medium-bodied, vibrant Pinot Noir that has integrated acidity, fine tannins, and outstanding length. It’s going to benefit from a year or two in bottle and keep for upwards of a decade."

The Wine Advocate scored this 93+ saying "Medium to deep ruby-purple colored, the 2016 Mardikian Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir displays earth-inspired notions of truffles, damp soil and forest floor with a core of black cherries, cinnamon, cloves and pomegranate plus a waft of potpourri. Full-bodied, rich and quite spicy in the mouth, it has a solid frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness with a very long finish of exotic spice." Extremely Limited!!
