About Martinelli 2014 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast
The Martinelli family have been growing grapes in Sonoma sine the late 1800's. They own 19 vineyards and their vineyard names show up on some of California's most prestigious and collectible bottles. This Pinot Noir is made from grapes sourced from their vineyards in the northern Sonoma Coast in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Each vineyard block goes through meticulous sample testing and is picked at optimum brix levels to ensure mature, ripe fruit flavors. After being picked, the fruit undergoes a five-day cold soak to maximize the early extraction of flavor and color. This is followed by a wild yeast fermentation that promotes greater character and depth when the wine matures. Sugar and malolactic fermentations are completed in barrel, and the wine is sur lie aged in 70% new French oak for 10 months. The wine is neither heat nor cold stabilized, is un-fined and un-filtered, and is clarified only by racking before bottling. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 05 points saying "This wine is memorable and impressive, a ripe exploration of earthy goodness that's rich and velvety smooth. Spicy red fruit seduces amidst a well-developed core of complex orange peel and cardamom highlights, the oak well-integrated and supportive."
