A Best Wine of 2019!!
This wine is produced by the third generation of the Fetzer family. Ben and Jake Fetzer purchased the Masut Ranch in 1992 to grow organic Pinot Noir. Of course the family's roots go far back in that region and was ahead of its time as the region is now considered one of the very best areas for growing Pinot Noir in all of California. The high elevation vineyard, around 1,000 feet above sea level is 35 acres of Pinot Noir which straddle the western mountains at the headwaters of the Russian River. It's located in the brand new Eagle Peak AVA.

Grapes are hand-picked and de-stemmed before a 4-6 day cold soak. Fermentation is over 10 days in open top stainless steel tanks. The wine aged 12 months in 32% new French oak barrels.

Beverage Dynamics selected this as one of the Best Wines of 2019! They scored it 96 points saying "You may not be familiar with the Masut label, but you should be. Ben and Jake Fetzer (Yes, THAT Fetzer) are producing some stunning pinot noirs from the cool climate of Mendocino County. Their Estate Pinot Noir is a deep ruby in color. The nose is an enticing blend of black fruit and subtle spice. On the palate, the concentrated fruit is supported by a lush and lovely texture."

Tasting Panel Magazine scored this 93 points saying "Brothers Ben and Jake Fetzer, the grandsons of Barney Fetzer, founded this brand, which is named for a Native American word that translates as “dark, rich earth”; located in the mountainous Eagle Peak appellation, it remains the sub-AVA’s only winery. Aged 12 months in 32% new French oak, this silky red starts off with cherry, chocolate, cinnamon, and oak on the nose. Flavors of soy sauce, peppered fennel root, and coffee bean emerge through mineral-driven soil as blueberry and cherry notes are enveloped in a vanilla core."

Wine Spectator scored this 92 saying "Broad and fleshy, with layers of ripe, juicy cherry, plum and blueberry flavors. An engaging style that showcases zesty fruit in an elegant manner. Drink now through 2024."

Wine Enthusiast scored this 92 and made it an Editors' Choice saying "Generous dark-fruit flavors join leafy earthy complexities in this very rich and full-bodied wine. It has a soft expansive mouthfeel, moderate tannins and a great sense of concentration on the palate and through the long finish."
