Nickel & Nickel 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Quarry Vyd., Rutherford, Napa Valley

Gil Nickel who founded Far Niente started Nickel & Nickel to produce extraordinary single vineyard Napa Valley Cabs. Each is a very low production wine from a unique sub-appellation in Napa Valley. The Quarry Vineyard lies in the rolling hills on the east side of the Silverado Trail in Rutherford. Nickel and Nickel source Cabernet Sauvignon from three blocks in the vineyard with white loamy soil that provides good drainage and reduces vigor. The grapes from these 20 year old vines are small, concentrated and loaded with flavor. Of course we know the 2014 vintage brought superb quality and ripeness as well. The wine macerated on the skins for just over two week. It was aged 16 months in 54% new French oak barrels. The 2014 Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon delivers a wonderful expression of both lush, juicy fruits and supple earthiness. Cherry notes shine over a medley of dried herbs, earth and tea. This intriguing combination continues to build as the char and spicy toast from the French oak add another element of flavor. The wine is rich, yet supple, and lingers on the palate through a long, expansive finish. Limited!
