About Numanthia 2015 Toro D.O., Numanthia-Termes

In the middle ages, Toro wines were enjoyed all over Spain and beyond. Reestablished in 1933 the Toro D.O. currently has 14,000 acres planted, but Numanthia Estate has singlehandedly put Spain's Toro region back on the map, by producing award-winning wines celebrated worldwide, that have reached Icon status. The high altitude (2,000 feet) of the vineyards offers extremely favorable conditions for the grapes to mature and develop. The yields from these vines are some of the lowest in Europe averaging less than 1 ton per acre. The Tinta de Toro grape which is a clone of Tempranillo, is very dark in color, especially these very concentrated old vines grapes, so the wine shows deep color and rich extraction. This wine is made with grapes from vines 70 to 100 years old that undergo a rigorous selection for optimal health and maturation.

James Suckling scored this 96 points saying "Astonishing fragrance for a Toro red, married to a huge body and a massive tannin structure in a way that’s without comparison in Spain and the world. Very long, plush finish that gets more and more delicate as it extends in the direction of the horizon. Drink or hold. This should have decades ahead of it."

Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "This powerful red is reserved, but has depth and intensity. Anise, mineral and tar notes give this an austere character, but there's a core of ripe fruit detail, supported by well-integrated tannins and enough acidity to keep this balanced."

Vinous scored this 94 points saying "Inky, glistening ruby. Potent, highly perfumed aromas of black raspberry, cherry cola, vanilla, fresh flowers and allspice carry a smoky overtone. Juicy, penetrating red and dark berry, cherry liqueur, spicecake and violet pastille flavors show superb energy, and an undercurrent of juicy acidity provides support. Gently chewy tannins frame an impressively long, sappy finish that strongly echoes the cherry and floral notes. Drinking window: 2023 - 2033"
