About Ornellaia Solare 2017 Bolgheri Superiore
For this 2017 Ornellaia Artist Series Label the artist Tomas Saraceno invites us to reflect on the impact of our actions on the planet as he interprets the character “Solare” (radiant). For this twelfth edition of the project Vendemmia d’Artista he has created a work of art for the estate and designed a label that expresses the vintage character.
One of Italy's most iconic wines. The desire to nurture the Estate's exceptional qualities has shaped Ornellaia's philosophy since the beginning. Ornellaia is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot and the faithful expression of unique terroir developed in harmony with nature. This 2017 is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged in oak barrels, 70% new and 30% once-used. Each wine remained in barriques, in Ornellaia's temperature controlled cellars for about 18 months. After the first 12 months of maturation, the wine was assembled and then returned to the barriques for an additional 6 months. After bottling, the wine aged a further 12 months prior to release.
Antonio Galloni for Vinous scored this 93-96 points from barrel saying "The 2017 Ornellaia is ripe, fleshy and totally seductive. Soft contours and generous, radiant fruit, give the 2017 much of its immediacy and sheer appeal. I tasted the 2017 from a core blend that is extremely promising. Simply put, the 2017 is shaping up to be a real beauty."
James Suckling scored this 95-96 from barrel saying "A solid and powerful young red with a linear line of tannins and fruit running through it. Very serious. Tannic and focused."
