About Ottella 2018 Lugana DOC
The Ottella estate is in the territory of the town of Peschiera del Garda. The soil is of glacial origin. The descent of ice and the detritus it carried towards the valley formed an amphitheatre of moraine hills, leaving the Lugana basin in its wake. Trebbiano di Lugana, known locally as “Turbiana” is genetically similar to Verdicchio. Recent studies at Milan University confirmed that the genome of “Trebbiano di Lugana” has characteristics that are unique from other Trebbiani.
Young Lugana DOC possesses freshness, flavor and crispness that is exclusive. Fine and unusual, it has a salty, spicy, smoky taste. The acidic vein gives energy and flavor, which, with time, becomes more expansive, exaggerated and attractive. But the real spirit of Lugana emerges in the wines after ageing.
Harvest and selection of the grapes are done strictly by hand. Most of the grapes are given a delicate, soft pressing of the whole bunches, the rest are gently destemmed. A temperature-controlled fermentation is followed by 5 months on fine lees before bottling.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an Editors' Choice and scored it 91 points saying "Tropical fruit, white spring flower and a hint of crushed tomato-vine lead the nose. The juicy palate doles out honeydew melon, grapefruit and papaya alongside crisp acidity. A saline note caps off the finish."
