About Ovid 2017 Red Blend, Napa Valley
OVID Napa Valley is a singular, dynamic and continuous experiment in terroir, nestled at an elevation of 1,500 feet on a secluded mountaintop in the western reaches of Pritchard Hill. Here, iron-rich volcanic soils, abundant sunshine and chaparral flora alchemize to reveal focused, long-lived wines that celebrate their source.
OVID founders Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson began planning the winery’s next chapter together with Silver Oak proprietor David Duncan and OVID managing partner Jack Bittner. Since then, we have worked to preserve the original je ne sais quoi of OVID, while also sharing resources from the Duncan family of wine brands, which share a deep commitment to sustainability, technology and quality.
Estate wines are sourced from their organically farmed fifteen acre vineyard, planted in one-acre blocks with rootstock and clonal combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah.
Vinous scored this 96 points saying "The 2017 Ovid is rich, ample and seductive. Layers of dark Cabernet fruit wrap around the palate in a fleshy, racy Pritchard Hill wine loaded with character. Black cherry, blueberry, lavender, mint, espresso and sweet spice build as this racy, sumptuous wine gains volume with air. The 2017 is powerful, but it also retains terrific energy while showing the more vibrant style favored at Ovid these days. I can't wait to see how it ages."
Jeb Dunnuck scored this 95 points saying "Deeper colored, the 2017 Proprietary Red Wine is based on 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot that saw the same 60% new French oak for 21 months. It offers an incredibly classic, classy style as well as notes of black raspberries, cassis, jammy raspberries, toasted bread, dried flowers, and tobacco. Rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it's another elegant, seamless wine that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 20-25 years or more." Extremely Limited!
