Poggerino is located in Radda in the Chianti Classico zone. They have just 30 acres of vines with ideal south-southwest exposure at 1200-1500 feet above sea level. The broken up “galestro” rock in the soil provides optimal drainage. The vineyards are all farmed organically. All of these factors together make for growing great Sangiovese.
For this Riserva a careful selection in the vineyard takes place and then the grapes are destemmed before fermentation with natural yeasts. The entire process of vinification and maceration takes place in concrete tanks for approximately 55 days with pumpovers and manual punchdowns. After, the wine is racked into large casks of of Slavonian oak and aged for 18 months before it is the assembled and bottled.
The Wine Spectator scored this 96 points saying "A mix of pure cherry and cigar humidor aromas lead off. The cherry theme continues, supported by rosemary, iron and tar flavors. Big, burly tannins line the finish and should carry this wine for another few decades. Best from 2023 through 2040."
